Ali Ghodsi is the co-founder and chief executive of Databricks, the data and AI platform company. Before starting the company he was a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley's AMPLab, where he was part of the team that created Apache Spark, the open-source distributed data processing engine Databricks was built around. He also held an academic post in Sweden before moving into industry full time, and he has led Databricks as CEO since taking over from Ion Stoica. Under his leadership the company expanded from managed Spark clusters into a broader lakehouse platform that combines data warehousing, governance and machine learning, and more recently into tooling for training and serving AI models on a company's own data. He argues publicly that enterprises should keep control of their data as they adopt AI rather than handing it to model vendors. Our coverage has followed Databricks' fundraising, including a round in which the company sought roughly one billion dollars and drew investor offers far above that figure.
