Biography

Qwen is the large language model family developed by Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of the Chinese technology group Alibaba. The line spans open-weight models released for free download alongside larger proprietary flagships offered through Alibaba's cloud API, and covers text, code, vision and audio. Because Alibaba publishes usable weights at many parameter sizes, Qwen has become one of the most common starting points for fine-tuning and on-premises deployment, and it anchors a large share of derivative models on public model hubs. That release strategy has also made Qwen the main reference point in the argument over how far open Chinese models trail, or match, closed American ones on reasoning and agentic benchmarks.
