AMD, formally Advanced Micro Devices, is an American semiconductor company that designs CPUs, GPUs and AI accelerators and has them manufactured by external foundries. Its Ryzen and EPYC processors, built on the Zen architecture, restored its competitiveness against Intel in desktop and data center computing, and the 2022 acquisition of Xilinx added programmable logic to the portfolio. In AI, its Instinct data center GPU line and the open source ROCm software stack represent the most substantial alternative to Nvidia for training and inference, though software maturity remains the obstacle customers cite most often. Because buyers want a second source for AI compute, AMD's roadmap execution affects pricing and availability across the whole market rather than just its own share. The company is led by chief executive Lisa Su. Our coverage has followed its acquisition of Taalas, a startup that etches AI models directly into silicon.
