Brian Hie

Biography

Brian Hie is a computational biologist, an assistant professor at Stanford University and an innovation investigator at the Arc Institute, where he directs a lab applying machine learning to biological sequence. He took his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and works at the intersection of language modeling and molecular biology, treating DNA and protein sequence as a language that models can learn to read and generate. He leads work on the Evo family of genome language models, including Evo 1 and Evo 2, which are trained on large collections of genomic data and can generate sequence at scales ranging from individual genes to whole genomes. His earlier research covered protein language models and evolutionary approaches to antibody design. That work sits at the front of the debate over generative biology, where the same capability that accelerates research also carries biosecurity risk.
