Broadcom is a United States semiconductor and infrastructure software company that supplies networking silicon, custom chips and enterprise software. Its chip business spans Ethernet switching and routing silicon used throughout data centers, optical and wireless components, and storage connectivity, while its software side grew substantially through the acquisitions of CA Technologies, Symantec's enterprise unit and VMware. In AI, its most consequential role is as a design partner for custom accelerators: it co-develops application-specific chips with hyperscale cloud providers, most visibly Google's Tensor Processing Units, and supplies the high-speed interconnect that ties large training clusters together. That gives it a share of AI infrastructure spending which does not depend on selling a branded GPU. For readers, Broadcom is the clearest example of how much AI value accrues to companies that never appear in a model announcement. Our coverage has followed OpenAI's custom chip work and Google's decision to add Marvell as a second custom silicon partner, ending Broadcom's exclusive run on that program.
