Chris Lattner

Biography

Chris Lattner is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Modular and the creator of the Mojo programming language. He built LLVM as a graduate project and it became the compiler infrastructure underpinning much of modern software, then led the Clang compiler and created Swift at Apple, where he ran the developer tools group. He later worked on Tesla's Autopilot software, led TensorFlow infrastructure at Google, where he started the MLIR compiler framework, and spent time at the chip company SiFive. At Modular he is trying to rebuild the AI software stack so models are not locked to a single vendor's hardware, with Mojo offering Python-compatible syntax at systems-language performance. His record makes him one of the few engineers whose compiler work has repeatedly become default industry infrastructure.
