Biography

Cognition is a United States artificial intelligence company founded in 2024 by Scott Wu that builds autonomous software engineering tools. Its first product, Devin, is an agent that takes a task description and works through it the way a developer would, planning, editing files, running code and iterating on failures rather than only suggesting completions inside an editor. The company later acquired Windsurf, an AI-native coding editor, giving it both an agent that can work unattended and an interface where a human stays in the loop. That combination places it directly against GitHub Copilot, Cursor and the coding agents shipped by the large model labs, in one of the most commercially active areas of applied AI. For readers, Cognition is a test of how much routine engineering work can be handed to software.
