Biography

Databricks is a San Francisco-based data and AI company founded by the creators of Apache Spark. Its core product is the lakehouse, an architecture that merges data lake storage with warehouse-style querying and governance, delivered as a managed platform on top of the major clouds. The company has expanded steadily into AI: it acquired MosaicML to build model training capability, released open-weight models of its own, and now sells Lakebase, a database designed for agent workloads, and Genie, a natural language analytics assistant. Its pitch is that enterprises should run models next to their own governed data rather than shipping data to a model vendor, which puts it in direct competition with Snowflake and with the cloud providers hosting it. It remains privately held and is among the most closely watched pre-IPO companies in enterprise software.
