Etched is a United States AI hardware startup building inference chips designed around a single model architecture rather than general-purpose computation. Its bet is that the transformer has stabilized enough to be burned into silicon, so it fixes the architecture in hardware and spends the resulting die area on throughput instead of flexibility. The company sells complete systems it describes as frontier inference clusters rather than individual accelerators, targeting operators that serve very large models at high request volumes. Its investors include Jane Street, Sequoia Capital, Kleiner Perkins and Andreessen Horowitz. Etched is one of several startups arguing that the economics of serving models, not training them, will decide the next phase of AI hardware, a market where NVIDIA's general-purpose GPUs currently dominate. Our coverage has followed a 700 million dollar raise at a 21 billion dollar valuation, which roughly doubled the company's price in the space of a month.
