GitHub is a United States developer platform that hosts source code and coordinates collaborative software development. Built on the Git version control system, it provides repository hosting, pull requests, issue tracking and code review for open-source projects and companies alike, and it holds the largest public collection of source code in the world. Microsoft acquired the company in 2018 and has run it as a subsidiary since. Beyond hosting, GitHub operates GitHub Actions for continuous integration and deployment, and GitHub Copilot, the completion and agent product that brought AI assistance into mainstream developer workflows. Because so much software passes through the platform, changes to its defaults tend to propagate across the industry, and its aggregate activity data is one of the few visible measures of how AI is changing the way code gets written. Our coverage has followed the platform's commit volume, which roughly doubled in four months before running into capacity limits.
