Google DeepMind is Alphabet's artificial intelligence research division, formed by merging the London-based DeepMind lab with Google Brain. DeepMind was founded in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014, and built its reputation on reinforcement learning results including AlphaGo and on AlphaFold, the protein structure prediction system whose lead researchers received a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The combined organization develops the Gemini model family behind Google's consumer and developer AI products, along with specialized systems such as the WeatherNext line of AI weather forecasting models and work in mathematics, biology and materials science. It is unusual among frontier labs in sustaining a large scientific research program alongside commercial model development, inside a company that owns its own chips, data centers and distribution. Our coverage has followed rapid Gemini release cycles, DeepMind's weather forecasting results, and the reorganization of Google's AI groups.
