Hugging Face is a United States company that runs the main public repository for machine learning models, datasets and demos. Founded in 2016 by French entrepreneurs and headquartered in New York, it started as a chatbot product before pivoting to open-source tooling, and its Transformers library became the standard way to load and run pretrained models in Python. The Hub now hosts hundreds of thousands of model checkpoints and datasets, along with Spaces for hosted demos and libraries covering tokenization, diffusion models, datasets and training. Because most open-weight releases land there first, the platform functions as shared infrastructure for the field and as a rough census of what is being built. Our coverage has followed a reported NVIDIA move to acquire the company, a security breach involving Hugging Face that led 15 state attorneys general to demand answers from OpenAI, and the platform's role as a distribution point in several incidents involving autonomous agents.
