IBM is an American technology and consulting company selling enterprise hardware, software and services, with mainframes, hybrid cloud through Red Hat, and consulting as its core businesses. Its research division is one of the oldest corporate labs in computing and now develops the Granite family of open-weight language, code, speech and vision models aimed at enterprise deployment rather than consumer chat. IBM releases Granite weights under permissive licenses and pairs them with the watsonx platform for tuning and governance, positioning itself as the vendor for regulated industries that want models they can run and audit themselves. The company also invests in quantum computing and in AI acceleration for its own systems. For AI readers IBM matters less as a frontier lab than as a test of whether smaller, cheaper, auditable models can win enterprise work. Our coverage has followed the Granite 4.2 reasoning models and their unconventional architecture choices.
