Jeff Dean

Biography

Jeff Dean is an American computer scientist and one of the most influential engineers in the history of large-scale computing. He spent about 27 years at Google, where he served as chief scientist and previously led Google AI, and he created or co-created much of the infrastructure the company was built on, including MapReduce, Bigtable and Spanner. He also co-founded Google Brain and drove the development of TensorFlow, the framework that carried deep learning into mainstream production use, and later worked on the Pathways architecture behind Google's large models. His papers remain a common reference point for anyone building distributed systems or training infrastructure. In August 2026 he left Google to start Discovery Loop, a public-benefit organization aimed at automating scientific research.
