Modular is a United States AI infrastructure company founded in 2022 by Chris Lattner and Tim Davis. Lattner previously created the LLVM compiler infrastructure and the Swift programming language, and the company's premise is that AI performance is limited less by hardware than by the fragmented software stack sitting on top of it. Its two main products are Mojo, a programming language that aims to pair Python's syntax with systems-level performance, and MAX, an inference platform meant to run the same model efficiently across CPUs, GPUs and specialized accelerators without rewriting kernels for each vendor. That portability is a direct challenge to CUDA's position as the default substrate for AI compute. Qualcomm acquired Modular in June 2026. For readers, the company is the most credible ongoing attempt to loosen the software lock-in around AI hardware. Our coverage has followed Mojo reaching version 1.0 and Modular extending its stack across AWS Trainium, Google TPUs and Qualcomm silicon.
