Paul Christiano is an American AI alignment researcher and the founder of the Alignment Research Center. He led alignment research at OpenAI from 2017 to 2021, where he was a co-developer of reinforcement learning from human feedback, the training method that turned raw language models into instruction-following assistants and now underpins most deployed chat systems. His research since has focused on scalable oversight and eliciting latent knowledge, the problem of how humans can evaluate systems more capable than themselves, along with formal approaches to interpreting model behavior. He has served as a senior technical adviser at the United States Center for AI Standards and Innovation within NIST, working on government evaluation of frontier models. In September 2026 he joined the OpenAI Foundation Board and its Safety and Security Committee. For readers, he is one of the few people whose work spans both the technique that made current models usable and the effort to keep them in check. Our coverage has followed his appointment to OpenAI's safety board.
