Perplexity AI is an American company that operates an AI answer engine, founded in 2022 by Aravind Srinivas and colleagues. Its main product answers questions conversationally with inline citations to web sources, positioning itself as an alternative to traditional search rather than as a general chatbot. The company has expanded into subscriptions, the Comet browser, publisher revenue-sharing arrangements and agentic products that carry out multi-step tasks on a user's behalf, including its Computer agent platform. It relies on third-party frontier models alongside its own tuned systems, which makes it a bellwether for whether an application-layer company can build a durable business on models it does not own.
