Qualcomm is a United States semiconductor company best known for Snapdragon mobile processors and for the wireless technology patents that underpin modern cellular networks. Its chips power a large share of Android smartphones, and its licensing business collects royalties across the industry. The company has spent recent years reducing its dependence on handsets, pushing into automotive computing, PCs built on Arm-based Snapdragon X processors, and edge AI, where it argues that running models on device rather than in the cloud is cheaper and better for privacy. In 2026 it moved further up the stack by acquiring Modular, adding the Mojo language and the MAX inference platform to its portfolio and signalling an intent to compete on AI software as well as silicon. For readers, Qualcomm is the main proponent of the case that a meaningful share of inference will happen on devices rather than in data centers. Our coverage has followed Modular extending its AI stack to Qualcomm hardware alongside AWS Trainium and Google TPUs.
