Sam Altman is an American entrepreneur and the chief executive of OpenAI. He co-founded the location-sharing startup Loopt, then ran the accelerator Y Combinator as president from 2014 to 2019, backing an unusually large number of companies that later became significant. He co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and became its chief executive, steering it from a nonprofit research lab into a capped-profit company backed heavily by Microsoft, and into consumer products, most consequentially ChatGPT. He was briefly removed by the board in November 2023 and reinstated days later after employee and investor pressure. He is also involved in ventures outside OpenAI, including nuclear energy and biometric identity projects, and he has pushed for compute and chip investment on a scale without precedent in the software industry. Our coverage has followed OpenAI's release of a separate ChatGPT experience for teenagers, built around age assurance rather than formal identity checks.
