Biography

Shanghai AI Laboratory is a Chinese public research institute that develops open foundation models and releases them to the research community. It is best known for the InternLM family of large language models and the Intern-S line of multimodal and science-oriented models, along with open toolchains for training, evaluation and deployment that other labs and universities build on. Its research agenda leans toward scientific applications in chemistry, biology, materials and physics reasoning rather than consumer chat products, and it publishes weights and benchmarks alongside its papers. As a state-supported institute it also functions as shared infrastructure for Chinese AI research, training models at a scale most academic groups cannot reach on their own.
