Starcloud is an American startup founded in 2024 that is building orbital data centers, satellites designed to run AI inference in space on solar power while radiating waste heat into vacuum. Headquartered in Woodinville, Washington and led by chief executive Philip Johnston, it flew the first Nvidia H100 GPU to orbit aboard Starcloud-1 in November 2025, a demonstration mission rather than a commercial service. The company's argument is that power and cooling, not chips, are the binding constraints on terrestrial AI data centers, and that orbit offers continuous solar energy without land acquisition or grid connections. Skeptics point to launch cost, radiation tolerance, servicing and downlink bandwidth as unresolved problems. It is among the clearest examples of how far AI compute demand is pushing infrastructure proposals outside conventional engineering. Our coverage has followed its 250 million dollar raise and the launch capacity bottleneck it faces in getting hardware to orbit.
