Project Management

Productivity

Project Management is the systematic practice of planning, executing, and monitoring work so that a team delivers a defined outcome within agreed time and cost. The work starts by breaking a goal into tasks, assigning owners, mapping dependencies, and then tracking progress against a schedule. Software teams now run this inside issue trackers rather than spreadsheets, because the tracker doubles as the record of what changed and why. Linear, Jira, Asana, and Notion model the same primitives — issue, assignee, status, sprint or cycle — with different opinions about speed and structure. Linear leans toward small product teams that want keyboard-driven speed, while Jira suits larger organizations that need custom workflows and audit trails. AI features increasingly sit on top of these tools, drafting task descriptions, merging duplicate tickets, and estimating effort from past cycles. The common pitfall is treating the tool as the process. A board full of tickets nobody closes creates the appearance of control without the discipline of prioritization. Project management is also distinct from product management: product management decides what to build and why, while project management governs how and when it ships.
