Google is turning Maps into something closer to a personal assistant. Ask Maps, the Gemini-powered conversational layer the company launched in March, is gaining agentic capabilities that let it order food, book hotels and find event tickets — completing the transaction rather than just pointing at a link.

The shift is deliberate. Google has spent two decades building Maps as a tool for finding places. The new features are aimed at finishing the task once the place has been found.

From search to checkout

Food ordering is the clearest example. A user can open Ask Maps and describe what they want in plain language — the example Google offers is asking where to order vegan avocado toast and an oat milk latte near home — and the assistant surfaces nearby restaurants that actually carry those items. From there it populates a cart and hands payment off to partner platforms, with Uber Eats, Toast and Square integrated at launch.

Hotel booking follows a similar shape but leans harder on comparison. A request such as finding a top-rated hotel with an artsy vibe near a gym in downtown Miami for next weekend prompts Ask Maps to check availability and compare prices across options before presenting a shortlist. Event ticketing works the same way.

The design choice worth noting is the handoff. Google is not processing the payment itself; it assembles the order and passes it to the merchant's existing platform. That keeps partner relationships intact and sidesteps the harder regulatory and liability questions that come with an agent spending money autonomously.

Personal Intelligence arrives in Maps

Alongside the transactional features, Google is extending Personal Intelligence to Ask Maps, letting the assistant draw on a user's Gmail and Google Calendar to personalise answers. The company's examples are travel-shaped: asking what time an upcoming flight lands in Vancouver, or asking for recommendations for food and activities near a hotel already booked.

That connection is what separates this from a better search box. An assistant that can read the confirmation email knows the hotel address without being told, and knows the arrival time without being asked twice. It is also the part most likely to give privacy-minded users pause, since it requires granting Maps access to inbox and calendar contents.

The competitive picture

The launch lands in the middle of an industry-wide push to make assistants act rather than answer. OpenAI, Anthropic and Cloudflare have all shipped agent infrastructure in recent months, and the emerging pattern is consistent everywhere: natural-language intent in, a completed real-world action out, with a partner platform handling fulfilment.

Google's advantage in this particular fight is distribution and data. Maps already knows which restaurants exist, what they serve, when they are open and how highly they are rated, and it already sits on the home screen of most phones. Very few competitors can assemble that inventory from scratch, and fewer still can attach it to a calendar and an inbox the user already keeps up to date.

The features are rolling out in the United States. Google has not detailed an international timeline, and the launch partner list is US-centric, which suggests expansion will depend on signing equivalent fulfilment partners market by market. The harder test is trust: an assistant that surfaces a restaurant can be wrong without much cost, but an assistant that fills a cart and forwards it for payment is being asked to be right the first time.
