Google announced the largest reorganisation of its AI organisation to date on Wednesday, moving Demis Hassabis out of the Google DeepMind chief executive role, elevating Koray Kavukcuoglu to run the unit day to day, and confirming that Jeff Dean is leaving the company after 27 years. Alphabet shares fell roughly 5 percent on the news, erasing an estimated $160bn to $200bn in market value.

In a post titled "The next chapter of our AI momentum," chief executive Sundar Pichai framed the changes as a way to move faster. Google's leadership presented a unified front. The structure underneath tells a more complicated story.

Who moved where

Hassabis becomes chair of Google DeepMind and takes the additional title of chief scientist of Alphabet. He keeps running Isomorphic Labs, the AI drug-discovery company he has led alongside DeepMind since 2021. The new titles concentrate his time on long-horizon research and pull him away from shipping product.

Kavukcuoglu, who spent 13 years as DeepMind's chief technology officer and more recently served as Google's chief AI architect, steps up to senior vice president of Google DeepMind and reports directly to Pichai. His remit is unusually broad: Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and both the Gemini app and the developer-facing teams now sit under him.

Dean's departure is the sharpest break. He is leaving alongside Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat and researchers Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le to found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation aimed at automating scientific research itself. Google is staying on as a founding investor and cloud partner — an arrangement that preserves the relationship even as four of its most senior researchers walk out the door.

The tension underneath

Reporting around the reorg points to a familiar friction: Hassabis's preference for longer-horizon research set against the company's need to ship consumer products on a quarterly cadence. Consolidating model development, research and product under one executive reduces the number of people who can slow a launch down.

Google is streamlining its elite troops here, cutting down on redundancies.

That assessment came from analyst Jiang Liu of Turing Company, who added that Kavukcuoglu was already the main force driving execution, and that the reorg mainly removes reporting layers and concentrates resources on him.

The timing matters. Google has watched OpenAI and Anthropic steadily erode a lead in a field it helped invent, and the restructuring follows the exit of eight prominent researchers in roughly two months. Josh Woodward, handed the Gemini app in April while continuing to run Google Labs, was not named in the announcement.

What investors saw

The share price reaction was not really about any single executive. It reflected concern about continuity — whether Google can reorganise around AI without losing momentum, at a moment when OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Microsoft-backed teams are all pushing into consumer and enterprise markets simultaneously.

The optimistic case is straightforward: fewer layers, one accountable owner for Gemini, and a research chair freed to think past the next release. The pessimistic case is equally simple. Google has just replaced the two most recognisable names in its AI organisation, and it will spend the next several quarters proving the machinery still works without them.

For now, the clearest signal is where the reporting lines point. Gemini answers to Kavukcuoglu, and Kavukcuoglu answers to Pichai. Whatever else the reorg accomplishes, it makes it obvious who is accountable when the next model ships late.
