Apple said on October 31, 2026, that its first Apple Intelligence features for iPhone users in mainland China will arrive in December with iOS 27.3, and that Alibaba's Qwen model will be built into Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. Testing begins November 4 in the latest iOS developer beta, according to an announcement on Apple's China Newsroom.

Key takeaways
- Apple Intelligence reaches iPhones in China with iOS 27.3 in December; developer testing starts November 4.
- Alibaba's Qwen handles some requests in Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, while Apple's own models power the core features.
- Alibaba says it will not use user requests or generated responses to train its models, and the Qwen integration is opt-in.
Apple Intelligence China launch: what users get
Apple's China Newsroom post says the first batch of features runs on generative models that Apple built. They include Live Translation, Writing Tools, Clean Up in Photos, Genmoji, notification summaries and Type to Siri.
Apple said the new Siri AI and other next-generation features it announced at WWDC 2026 are not part of the first release. Other Apple platforms will follow after "necessary approvals," the company said.
Supported phones are the iPhone 16 line and later, iPhone Duo, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone Air. Siri and the device language must be set to English or Simplified Chinese.
How Qwen works inside Siri and Writing Tools
Qwen appears in three places. Siri can pass certain requests to Qwen to draw on its broader knowledge, and users can ask questions about photos and documents, including PDFs and presentations. In Writing Tools, Qwen can compose original content from scratch. Users sign in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple.
In Visual Intelligence, an "Ask Qwen" option identifies what the camera sees and can be opened from Camera Control, the Action button or Control Center, according to the Global Times, citing Alibaba's WeChat statement. That statement also said Apple asks for consent before any question, document or image is sent to Qwen.
Alibaba's data pledge
Alibaba said users can choose whether to turn on the Qwen integration and what information to share, Xinhua reported from Hangzhou. The company said it "will not use user requests or generated responses for model training."
The feature is open to people who bought an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone in China, or whose device location and Apple Account country or region are both set to China. Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu said Qwen will integrate into Apple's ecosystem, Xinhua said.
Context: a long road to approval
Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, but China requires generative AI services to clear regulatory filings. In July 2026, China's cyberspace authority completed filings for seven on-device generative AI services for smartphones, including Apple Intelligence, according to Xinhua.
Alibaba Chairman Joe Tsai publicly confirmed the relationship with Apple in February 2025, EqualOcean reported.
Wang Xiaojie, an AI expert at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, called it the first time a top global consumer hardware maker has used a Chinese large model as its main system-level AI backbone in China, according to Xinhua.
What's next
Apple has not said when iPad, Mac or Vision Pro users in China will get the features, or when the WWDC 2026 Siri upgrade will reach the market. Neither company disclosed financial terms.
