Schools That Block Google AI Will Lose Search

Google said Nov. 3, 2026, that Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search will be off by default for K-12 student accounts until admins enable them. Because school Search includes AI Mode and AI Overviews, schools that keep AI off would lose Search, Google's education chief told The New York Times.

Google said Nov. 3, 2026, that Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search will be switched off by default for K-12 student accounts until school administrators turn them on. Because Google treats its AI features as part of Search, schools that keep AI off would also cut students off from Google Search, Google's education chief told The New York Times.

Key takeaways

  • Google's education chief Chris Phillips wrote that access to the four products "will be entirely off for K-12 student accounts until school administrators explicitly turn them on."
  • Search for schools will include AI Mode and AI Overviews reworked to give step-by-step guided learning, Google said on X, so enabling Search also enables those AI features.
  • Google has not published a start date; The New York Times reported the change is expected in early 2027.

What Google changed in Workspace for Education controls

The announcement came in a Google blog post titled "Designing responsible AI for learning," signed by Phillips, Google's vice president and general manager for education. He wrote that the company was "updating our approach to controls" after "listening to schools, teachers, leading researchers, and policymakers."

Under the new model, the four products start in the off position for K-12 student accounts. Administrators must opt in. Google said it would "share more specifics with schools in the coming months ahead of the changes rolling out," and the post gives no rollout date or admin console details.

In a follow-up post on X quoted by PPC Land, Google said schools "can choose to turn ON one, two, or all of these services individually."

Why turning off Google AI also turns off Search

The catch is that Google's school version of Search comes with AI built in. Phillips told The New York Times that "Search and A.I. are deeply integrated." Students at a school that has banned AI "will not have access to search, and they'll see a message from their school that indicates it's not available," he said, according to the Times as quoted by PPC Land.

Google's X post said AI Mode and AI Overviews in Search for schools "will offer step-by-step guided learning through problems, so that students don't get quick answers to schoolwork." According to 9to5Google, citing the Times, schools will get two options in early 2027: one with AI Overviews and other AI features on, and one with Guided Learning in their place. Neither option, as described, removes AI from Search.

Critics seized on that point. "They can't turn off AI without losing Search," Ed Newton-Rex wrote in a reply to Google's post, according to PPC Land.

Guided Learning rollout in Classroom and Search

Google also expanded Guided Learning, its tutoring-style mode that walks students through problems. It said Guided Learning became globally available in Google Classroom on Nov. 3.

Guided Learning in Search starts with a pilot in select U.S. schools later in November, Google said, before expanding to other districts "in the coming months."

Context: schools push back on AI by default

The decision lands as school districts and teachers unions press vendors for tighter control over classroom AI. Microsoft's contract-based school AI standard, negotiated with the American Federation of Teachers and the United Federation of Teachers, took effect Nov. 1 and bars training on student data.

What's next

Google has promised more details before the rollout. Districts that block AI today should check whether student accounts will lose Search, and plan for that before early 2027.

FAQ

Can a school enable Search but keep Gemini off? Yes. Google says schools can turn each service on individually. But Search for schools includes AI Mode and AI Overviews, so enabling Search brings those AI features with it.

When does the change take effect? Google has not given a date. The New York Times reported early 2027.
